GENESIS
The Maison des cultures nomades (MCN) was founded in 2006 by Manon Barbeau, a veteran filmmaker and founding president of Wapikoni Mobile; the co-founding members who supported her at the very beginning of this initiative were André Dudemaine and Claude Picard. The MCN's goal was to take over from Wapikoni's recording studio in order to offer more seasoned musicians professional sound recording resources and development workshops. At the same time, the organization designs around twenty shows where First Nations and Inuit artists welcome artists from diverse backgrounds on stage. A first digital broadcasting platform was created in 2017, and under the leadership of the new artistic director Joëlle Robillard, the Maison des cultures nomades officially became Musique Nomade. With an expanded team, Musique Nomade is intensifying its musical production component by personalizing and deepening the professional support provided to artists. Musique Nomade also became a publishing house, production company, and entertainment agency, and created the online Indigenous music listening platform Nikamowin. MN thus strengthened its ties with the music industry and made numerous representations in support of Indigenous artists.
NIKAMOWIN
In November 2018, Musique Nomade launched the independent streaming platform Nikamowin: a music listening and sharing tool that allows you to discover Indigenous artists and the musical diversity of Quebec and Canada. It is a unique showcase of its kind, dedicated to emerging and established artists alike. The term Nikamowin means "music" or "song" in Atikamekw: a meaning that can vary depending on the context. In Cree, this same word would translate, for example, as "the act of singing." Thus, the Nikamowin platform brings together translations of the words "music," "song," and "sing" in 17 different languages.
