STOPOVER IN ANICINAPE TERRITORY
Musique Nomade and Minwashin are collaborating once again to bring to life a new album entitled Nogom Nikamowin. In the fall of 2024, the Stopover team travelled to the Outaouais region, to the Anishinaabe territory, for a creative residency initiated by Minwashin as part of a project led by Emilio Wawatie, artist and member of the organization.
From this approach emerged a contemporary folk album, with songs performed in the Anishinaabe language. Nogom Nikamowin covers three Anishinaabe dialects across its six songs, each representing a season. The album took shape thanks to the participation of Roger Wylde (lyrics, language keeper, teweikan), Charlie Penosway (vocals, teweikan, guitar), Leila Twenish (vocals), Seayenna Lee (vocals), Penaki (traditional singing), Lyle Odjick (harmonica), and Robin Decontie (traditional singing). Each artist brought their own unique style and sensibility to the project. The album's concept highlights the six seasons recognized by the Anishinaabe nation: Pipon (winter), Sikwan (pre-spring), Minokamin (spring), Nipin (summer), Takwakan (autumn), and Pitci pipon (pre-winter).

IN MEMORY OF LEILA TWENISH
We wish to honor the memory of Leila Twenish, a participant in the stopover and cousin of Emilio Wawatie, who left us far too soon. Her radiant presence, her deep connection to Anishinaabe culture and language, and her invaluable contribution to this project remain etched in our hearts. Her spirit lives on through this collective work, which celebrates the link between the Anishinaabe people and the cycles of nature.
